Response to Covid-19

Like the rest of the world our school has been affected by Co-Vid19. Most students have left campus with around a quarter staying on. Even though we are spread around the world, we remain a coherent community. Thanks to our dedicated staff, teaching and learning continues on an online basis. Our students on and off campus are handling a demanding situation impressively well and are in good spirit. Some of our College activities and traditions have been renewed in surprising glocalized ways. You can read about some of them in our latest newsletter .

Like all colleges in the movement, we continue to monitor the situation in our surrounding area. It is impossible to predict the trajectory of Co-Vid19 and its impact on the college. We remain committed to ensuring that our current students have as complete a UWC experience as possible, and to beginning the journey for a new generation of students. We aim, as much as we are able, to open as close to normal for the next school year and are putting many plans into place to welcome students back to campus safely.

Our students on campus will be offered a Home Away from Home in June, thanks to generous cooperation with local host families and the UWC network in Norway. Many of the students will go directly back to campus early in July, where we will create a special holiday program for them. Thanks to parents, alumni, national committees and all other supporters for their support in these uncertain times.

Geir Jørgen Bekkevold – New Chair of our Board

At the Council Meeting, hosted electronically this weekend, new Chairs were elected for our Board and Council. We are pleased to welcome Geir Jørgen Bekkevold as the new Chair of our Board. He is a Norwegian politician representing the Christian Democratic Party in his 3rd period in the Parliament. Since Jan 2019 Mr Bekkevold has been the leader of the Health Committee in the Norwegian Parliament and 2nd parliamentary leader for his party. He enters the position with a strong affinity to the values of the UWC and the Red Cross.

Frants Bernstorff-Gyldensteen  is elected as the new Chair of our Council. He is a former politician, being Mayor of Bogense Municipality 1990-1997. Mr Bernstorff served on our Board from 1993 to 2003 and for the International Board of the UWC movement from 2006 to 2014.

We would also like to use this opportunity to thank Kristin Vinje and Pär Stenbäck for the remarkable job they both have done in serving as our Chairs.

Sunniva Marie Roligheten (RCN ’17-’19)

A couple of weeks after grad, I started working on full time in Oslo in the national committee for Operation Day’s Work (ODW). I missed the fjord, my roommates and basically everything about RCN, but I think I am sort of used to live in a city now. In the committee we did a lot of fun work, but the best part was the visit from two young people from DR Congo. They both work in the mines close to their village, and they visited our summer camp to talk about their situation and help us create the ODW2019 campaign.

In December I was elected as the new leader of ODW, and 2nd of March the project for 2020 will be elected by Norwegian students. The work has already started, and it is very interesting, both to get more insight in ODW, the different networks that we are a part of (for example Global Campaign for Education) and to get real work experience. I am also responsible for the new national committee as they are all new to the work. It has been so nice to get to know them so far, and we are all very excited for the project, the seminars and all of the work.

Except of ODW I read and draw a lot, and try to not miss RCN too much.
