Red Cross in Førde

On the evening of 14 March students from the College were warmly welcomed by members of the Red Cross Youth in Førde who had organised a gathering to welcome two Youth Delegates from Colombia who will be engaged in local Red Cross activities for the next two months. Our three Colombians, Yerson, Yeison, and Andres, plus other Spanish-speaking students enjoyed the warm interaction with Willian and William, who have been in Norway for about seven months and relished the opportunity to converse in their native tongue. Those of us who didn’t speak Spanish enjoyed the company of the Norwegians, and we all enjoyed the pizza and the presentations, introducing ourselves and our organisations/projects. This was a first connecting step, and we aim for regular contact with local Red Cross youth.

Local Cooperation

Sogndal County Fair - Iman (L) and Jasmine (R) with the Fiskekake Burger prize winners!

Sogndal County Fair – Iman (L) and Jasmine (R) with the Fiskekake Burger prize winners!

Our student run organizations, SAFUGE, DROP and LEAF were represented at the County Fair for youth entrepreneurship in Sogndal last week; an occasion to see on what, and how, other student companies (Ungdomsbedrifter) are working. It was also an opportunity to talk about our own activities. Måløy Videregåande had won a competition that included major commercial companies to develop fish products  – one of their products was Fiskekake-burger!

We also got to know about projects with a strong humanitarian profile. At Flora Videregåande they are running a regular sports activity for immigrants – “Trimigration”, and they are supporting the running of a school in Malawi. We see much potential for local co-operation on projects with international involvement.

The Abel Prize

We are very proud and grateful that our students are able to take part in the Annual Norwegian Maths Competition – the Abel Prize.

The Olympiad consists of two selection rounds and a final round. In the first round, the participants receive twenty problems, each with a choice of five answers, to be solved in 100 minutes. The best 10% of the participants are then granted entry to the second round.  This Academic Year we had twenty-five students participating in Round 1 on November 7th, 2013 – out of a total of 3474 participants from 234 schools. Ten of them qualified for the 2nd Round on 16th January among the 345 participants from the rest of Norway, and three were invited to the finals in Trondheim on March 4th  with 25 other contestants.
Our congratulations go to Ricardo Montalvo Guzman who was placed 4th, to Yaojie Hu who was placed 5th, and Gong Pei who was 10th overall.
This year, Prime Minister Erna Solberg was present at the Prize Ceremony.

Gender Week

As part of Gender Week, the organizing team  invited the president of the Harry Benjamin Resource Center (HBRS, a foundation working for the rights of transgender people), Tone Maria Hansen, to give a World Today presentation on gender identity. During the last decade, Tone Maria has been featured in various newspaper articles and in a TV-broadcast documentary, Absolutt Tone Maria, and can be seen as one of the leading figures of the Norwegian transgender movement. We were delighted to host her on this, her fourth visit to the College.

Among the many other activities and events held during the week – films, discussions and presentations – the Gender Week team, collaborating with The Publishing Cabin,  have produced ‘A Brief Illustrated Herstory of Womankind’. Read it here.
