University life after UWC Red Cross Nordic

Preparing students for university applications and helping them in the process is an integral part of our work.

Mark Chalkley is our Senior University Counsellor here at UWC Red Cross Nordic. The main focus of his work is to assist and support students when they apply to colleges and universities. This includes leading workshops on how to write personal statements, helping students with all required documentation, writing counselor recommendations in support of applications, giving advice about possible and appropriate schools to apply to, and aiding students in applying for financial aid. He has deep knowledge of how to apply to schools in different parts of the world and personal connections with admissions personnel at various institutions. Mark has worked at RCN for many years and is a residential advisor to ten students. In 2019, Mark received the “Counselors That Change Lives” award from Colleges That Change Lives, for his dedicated support to any and all students who wish to further their studies post RCN.

For students to make the best possible decision on which universities they should attend after RCN, Mark also organizes visits to our College from many universities across the globe, both online and in person.

These autumn weeks are busy with visits and workshops; last weekend, ten recruiting institutions visited us after a 2-year pause due to the pandemic. To begin the season, we had the remodeled UWC Davis European Tour visit. They presented a series of talks on Saturday afternoon in the auditorium, ending with introductions from each visiting institution. On Sunday morning, the UWC Davis Fair began, after which we treated our guests to an excellent lunch in our Baking House, catered by DROP.

We now look forward to visits from many other institutions in the next couple of months!

UWC Day

2022-09-26T10:09:16+01:00September 26th, 2022|

UWC Day is the annual global celebration of the UWC mission and values, which takes place on 21 September every year, to coincide with the UN International Day of Peace. Each year, UWC Day is celebrated by thousands of people worldwide, including students and staff at UWC schools and colleges, national committees, UWC alumni and friends.

UWC Day is a moment to celebrate the strength and diversity of the UWC movement and our mission for a more peaceful and sustainable future through connecting and mobilizing UWCers globally. It serves as a chance to spread the word about UWC, our work, and values. But it is also an opportunity to reflect on what we do as a movement, to determine how to be more effective changemakers, and continue to challenge ourselves.

Celebrations at UWC Red Cross Nordic

This year we celebrated under the theme “Peace Begins With Us” to reflect on our collective responsibility toward building a more peaceful future for us all. At RCN we put together a program focusing on peace on different levels from personal, interpersonal, social, and global, with 3 different guest lecturers and a wide range of workshops throughout the day. Setting aside a whole day for this important topic allowed us to focus our time, and we appreciate all the external guests who used their time and spent the day with us. A special thank you to NOREC and county mayor of Vestland, Jon Askeland, for inspiring presentations on the topic.

We also want to thank everyone who run workshops for our students, staff and guests;

  • Jakob Sande Center for narrative art: Creative storytelling
  • Catherine Hårsaker: Humanitarian consequence of climate change
  • Norec: Diversity Ice breaker
  • Fjaler Municipality: Refugee coordinator Florence Hamper
  • Lesley Robertson: Peace at Mind
  • Nikki De Marco: Expression of Peace
  • Nati Betran: Non-violent communication
  • Our students led by Alberto, Dima, Alima and Keisha: Dodgeball, Sustainability, Anti-racism and inclusive flag

The day ended with an amazing show put together by our students consisting of dance performances and songs – all around, the topic of Peace and Peace begins with us!

Book launch on UWC Day

2022-09-21T07:35:47+01:00September 21st, 2022|

The story of the first 25 years of UWC Red Cross Nordic is written by award-winning author and journalist Mette Karslvik, a first-generation alumna of the college. Through individual narrative, Karlsvik paints a picture of how a school dedicated to peace and sustainability has been established and flourished in a small fjord arm in western Norway, and the impact it has on the world stage. You get to know of daily life experiences and challenges from many perspectives, students, teachers, staff members, management, and members of the Board. It also gives an insight into the incredible support from individual volunteers and stakeholders and how RCN works in practical ways to realize the values of UWCV and the Red Cross. Central in the bigger narrative is the support the college receives from the Nordic countries, a region dedicated to peace and sustainability.

This book wouldn’t have been published without the enthusiasm and dedication of Arne Osland, head of our Nordic Pillar and the guidance of Ivar Lund-Mathiesen, Member of the Board. We would like to thank their work!

The book is available in hard copies in Norwegian and in e-book format in English. Please read our story:

A Doer and a Thinker

2022-09-15T08:33:51+01:00September 15th, 2022|

At the end of his engagement for the Fjaler Theatre Festival, Dag Hareide visited our college to engage with our students. Dag Hareide is an author, organizational leader, and interdisciplinary thinker. He has been, among other positions, director of the Rainforest Foundation, one of the largest rainforest organizations in the world, and director of the Nansen Academy, a leading institution for mediation and conflict management. He visited Global Politics, Environmental Systems and Societies, and Norwegian classes to talk about development for human beings and other living creatures, focusing both on remarkable historical achievements and the seriousness of the crises we face today. “The root cause for all of them is that we as human beings are spreading ourselves at an unprecedented speed” he said.  He also delivered an open lecture on the influence of big tech on our daily life based on his recently released book. Our students met a doer and a thinker, a dialogue partner who challenged and inspired them.
