‘Stop the Violence’ Campaign

2018-10-16T09:31:32+01:00April 16th, 2018|

Stopp Valden was instigated in 1995 after 17 year old Andreas Stavseth was shot in the street in Oslo, and the ensuing programme has the aim to stop violence and bullying in all its forms. On Thursday 4th April, members of our Red Cross Youth Group were invited to speak at Dale VGS as part of their Safe Russetid programme. We represented Fjaler Red Cross in talking about the Stopp Valden programme, by three members of the youth group: Maja (Norway), Juan Pablo (USA), and Devina  (Indonesia), along with Red Cross Coordinator Avis Rolfe (UK). They addressed the following questions:

• Do you see inclusion round you? How do you include others?
• What creates a safe environment?
• How can we respect people’s boundaries at russetid?
• What is bullying?

It was great to see that a good number of people already feel like the school is an inclusive and welcoming place, but the activity also highlighted different perspectives that exist on this topic. Hopefully the session gave the participants a pause for thought when approaching russetid, and a moment to reflect on making the celebrations safe and inclusive for everyone.

Following consultation with RCN, Carlos Escobar invited our new Rektor, Guðmundur (currently working at Brighton College Al Ain), to an alumni gathering at New York University Abu Dhabi last week. In the picture, from left to right, are:

1. Nghiem Huynh (RCN ’12 – ’14) – Vietnam; 2. Mariana Arrieta (RCN ’14 – ’16) –  Venezuela; 3. Emil Goldsmith Olesen (RCN ’12 – ’14) – Denmark; 4. Bassel Abifaraj (RCN ’95 – ’97) – Lebanon; 5. Boyan Stoychev (RCN ’11 – ’13) – Bulgaria; 6. Ilma Jahovic (RCN ’12 – ’14) – Bosnia and Herzegovina; 7. Leonore Wunsche (RCN ’12 – ’14) – Germany; 8. Daniel Rey (RCN ’14 – ’16) – Colombia; 9. Carlos Escobar (RCN ’12 – ’14) – El Salvador; 10. Jigna Sampat (RCN ’96 – ’98) – India.
RCN, coordinated by Arne Osland (Director of Development) and Mostak Rahman (Alumni and Development Officer) has in recent years set up a series of events for engagement with alumni both on and off campus. We hope the NYUAD event is the first of many engagements for Guðmundur with our UWC RCN alumni.

Spanish Cooperation

2018-10-16T09:31:32+01:00April 14th, 2018|

Nordahl Grieg vgs is one of the schools in Norway we have joined together with as part of the Ashoka Changemaker School network. As part of this co-operation, one of our Spanish classes has established a language immersion exchange. The experience started last February with three of our Spanish-speaking students and teacher travelling to Bergen hosted by their students Maria, Benjamin, and Amanda (centre of picture). This week we have had the pleasure of welcoming them to our College for different language and culture exchange opportunities.

¡Bienvenidos y Gracias!
