Passionate about Diversity and Food

When I left Bolivia, at 16, to attend UWC Red Cross Nordic, I could not believe how much I was going to learn and live. RCN has given me the tools, support, and the self-confidence that I needed to expand my horizons. Every friend I made there, has made a huge impact on my life and I am thankful for it.

After RCN, I decided to study in the United States. I am currently in the last year of my undergraduate program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. I am completing a Bachelor of Sciences in Human Nutrition and a minor in Biology. I chose nutrition as a career because I am passionate about food and how much diversity there is on it and how we can apply it in a healthy way to our daily lives. During my last year, I am taking the time to explore student clubs and organizations that focus on sustainability, diversity, and dietetics. Recently, we celebrated the Hispanic Heritage Month on campus. We had a variety of events where students, faculty, and staff members joined forces to celebrate our history. As part of it, I was interviewed by the university daily news, where I was asked what this month of celebration meant to me.

I still miss RCN and its people, and without them I would not be where I am now. Thank you!

New and Relevant Courses

2021-08-31T15:39:52+01:00August 31st, 2021|

At the start of a new school year we are introducing two new subjects, French Ab Initio and Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS). With more than 300 million users, from five continents, French is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world.

Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) uses an integrated approach, encouraging students to make informed judgments and decisions about the role of information and communication technologies in contemporary society. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the access and use of digitized information at the local and global level. ITGS provides a framework for the student to make informed judgments and decisions about the use of IT within social contexts.

On starting the course, Pablo Vega Rodriguez-Villa said: “I chose to take ITGS because technology is already changing our daily life, and it is becoming more and more important. I find it really interesting to be able to debate about the ethical problems that are relevant in our society today.”

In Memory of Disa Hynsjö (RCN 2005-2007)

2021-09-09T07:39:21+01:00August 23rd, 2021|

With shock and great sadness, we have learned that Disa passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, on July 18, 2021. Countless friends and staff members have fond memories of her time here at the College, and we celebrate and honor the continuation of her life story after RCN. Disa has enriched every community she has encountered in the journey of her life.

Disa graduated from UWC Red Cross Nordic in May 2007, and spent the following year in Latin America, volunteering and perfecting her Spanish. She went on to study at Macalester College, graduating summa cum laude in 2014 with majors in Economics and Mathematics. She worked as a research assistant at Princeton University until 2016, when she started her Ph.D. in Economics at Yale University, specializing in labor economics.

Disa was a gifted scholar and a phenomenal friend. She will be remembered with love by her friends for her brilliance, tenacity, sense of humor, athleticism, loyalty, and for her kind heart.

To Disa’s nearest and dearest, we give our deepest condolences. Disa leaves behind her beloved partner Diego, her parents, brothers, grandmother, and many others who loved her dearly and who will miss her sorely.

Disa’s death is difficult to understand and the sense of losing her is hard to bear. We want to offer these charities for those of you who wish to donate in honor of Disa’s life: Foundation for Heart and Lung Disease research or Doctors Without Borders.

With heavy hearts,

Olivia Bergman, Maja Stilling, Rochelle Wagner, Mattie Govan and friends
