Mine Awareness Day

2018-10-16T09:33:17+01:00April 8th, 2015|

The official logo of the dayLast Saturday, 4th of April, UWC Red Cross Nordic had its first campaign for the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. Under the motto: ‘Less pity, more AWARENESS’, students of the RCN Survivors of Conflict programme and those from countries affected by land mines led different activities to raise awareness about this often ignored issue.

Our main goal was to make people in the College understand that being a victim of a mine does not make anybody different and that we need to be exposed to more information about the problem of mines. Our thoughts were that disabilities reside in each person’s mind and that it is possible to go beyond them, as our fellow students have already proved.

The organizing group decided to hang up  flags of some of the countries affected by mines: Colombia, Western Sahara, Ethiopia, Angola, and some more. They created a wall with information about mines and painted a red X on our hands, which represented awareness of the problem.

Through an art session during brunch, an archery tournament, Colombian dance lessons and even a photoshoot we all showed our commitment to involve the community and educate more people about the dangers of land mines. The support we received from everyone was incredible!

UWC Red Cross Nordic would like to congratulate Jens Waltermann on his appointment at Executive Director of UWC International Office.

Jens already has unique experience of the UWC movement. An alumnus of UWC Pearson College, he joined the German National Committee in 2006 and currently chairs its Board. Throughout his service with the committee he has been closely involved with the creation of UWC Robert Bosch College in Freiburg, which opened in 2014, and is vice-chair of its Board.

We look forward to welcoming him to our campus at some point in the near future.

Exploring a Dirty Truth

UWC Atlantic College Alumna Ulrika Bjørkstén yesterday visited the College and showed her prize-winning film ‘Dirty Waters: Discovering the dirty truth about the future of the Baltic Sea’. It provided a great case study about the problems of international co-operation in dealing with environmental issues. The film was well received by the students and the follow-up discussion was lively with good questions and thoughtful comments. The evening was much appreciated by the many students who attended. Thank you, Ulrika.

Extracts from the film are available here.

A Clear Winner

Many congratulations to second year student Elisabeth Dietz for taking first place in the Norwegian High School Philosophical Association Olympiad. Students were given a choice of five topics and had to write their essay in English, German or French – not in their native Norwegian. Elisabeth chose the question: ‘Should a totalitarian party that gets enough votes to form a government through a democratic election be allowed to rule?’ The judges said that Elisabeth’s essay, “…showed good craftsmanship and an impressive level of reflection. It was a clear winner.”

Elisabeth was invited to participate in the second, final round of the competition having won the gold medal at the Baltic Sea Philosophical Essay event in 2014. In the first round of this latest competition, 286 students took part and of this number 34 went forward to the second and final round to compete for the overall prize. Having taken the first prize Elisabeth has now been invited to represent Norway in the Philosophy Olympics in Tartu, Estonia in May where 40 countries will send hopeful representatives.
