Nobel Peace Prize Nomination

2022-01-31T14:09:50+01:00January 31st, 2022|

UWC has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize! The nomination was made by Alfred Bjørlo, member of the Norwegian parliament for the Liberal Party from the region of Sogn and Fjordane (where UWC Red Cross Nordic is located):

– Enabling youth from all over the world to meet, live and get an education together, is one of the most important things we can do for peace and to make the world a better place. Today, I have therefore nominated United World Colleges for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize award, Bjørlo says. – UWC’s main idea of using education as a tool to create peace and connect people across borders, is wholly in the spirit of Alfred Nobel. In my opinion, UWC is a an excellent candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, not the least in a time when we experience increasing levels of conflict between countries and people in many parts of the world.

On Nov 24th we received a visit from Kimberly Mathisen, outgoing CEO of Microsoft Norway and becoming CEO of C4IR . The day was filled with discussions centered around the role data/ technology can play in tackling the big challenges the world is facing.

– In you I see future leaders with a growth mindset, qualities the world needs to tackle what is ahead of us. Action to tackle the climate crisis is urgent, and all sectors need to contribute. Avoiding an imminent crisis out of fear, is not a sufficient motivating factor. Change starts at a personal level, with everyone being involved. Kimberly is optimistic about a paradigm shift in the business world, not being driven solely by profit, but with a deeper understanding of the common good.
