IB Visual Art Exhibition

After months of work in the classroom experimenting, exploring and producing, after countless hours of preparation and setting up, the 2nd year IB Visual Art students of RCN held their Final Exhibition, for all the community to see, on Sunday the 8th of April. This was a very emotional and vulnerable moment for the 2nd year students, as each piece and each space was carefully thought through, carefully crafted and for some, extremely personal. All of this effort, however, did not go unnoticed and resulted in a stunning exhibition opening, breathtaking moments for the students when they saw staff, students and visitors reacting to their work, and lastly to a beautiful ending to their two years of hard work as RCN Visual Art students. Congratulations to all!

Bonfire outside the new Baking House

We have been delighted to be able to host a team of Support Staff from our sister College, UWC Mostar, during the second half of last week. UWC Mostar kindly hosted a team of RCN Support Staff in the summer of 2012 and we wanted to reciprocate.

Our twelve guests have had an action packed programme which included presentations, meetings, dinner in Bekker House, folk dancing (gammaldans), excursions into the local region and much more finishing with a farewell bonfire outside the new Baking House.

It has been a great opportunity to learn from each other and we would like to thank UWC Mostar for their visit. We are looking forward to the continuation of the cooperation.

Our students will arrange a special day on Landmine awareness on Saturday:

1100-1300: Kantina activities during brunch. Students share information and impressions from landmine affected countries. Information wall.
13.00: Kahout quiz.
15.30-17.30: Goalball and Race in pairs
19.00-20.00: Sharing Circle. Survivors sharing their stories

A video, made by Geireann (RCN ’19) was used to help promote the day.

Our Earth, Our Future

2018-10-16T09:31:35+01:00March 24th, 2018|

Nils Vagstad and Mike Doyle

The world is facing many environmental problems all around the globe today. In this year’s Environmental Global Concerns (GC) we explored some of these issues, with the events of the day being titled, ‘Our Earth, Our Future’. The event was organized by and for the students.

The aim of the GC was to raise awareness and to motivate students to make positive changes for the sake of the environment and this started the day before the GC. On Thursday the school celebrated Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8.30 to 9.30 pm. We celebrated this event by having a bonfire with hot chocolate and snacks.

On the day itself we had interesting lectures from Mike Doyle from UWC Maastricht on the topic of, Towards Carbon-neutral UWC’s and from Nils Vagstad from NiBIO who talked about Food security, nutrition and sustainability: A global challenge- a common responsibility.

During the day we also had a lot of workshops organized by students themselves. Here is an overview of all the workshops:

1. The meat industry: Dog farming
2. Hike and Food discussion
3. Vegetarianism and Veganism
4. Algae and Plastic in the Ocean
5. Do It Yourself
6. The Dark Side of Charity
7. Indigenous cultures and the Environment
8. Reasons behind, Solutions and Sustainable Energy
9. Cooking with Local food
10. Insects and New technologies
11. Creative solutions to environmental issues

At the end of the day we all hope that the students learned a lot of new things about our earth and came to recognise ever more strongly that it is worth fighting for its future – and our future.
