Magnea Gna Johannsdottir (RCN ’17)

2022-05-23T16:34:06+01:00May 23rd, 2022|

Magnea Gna Johannsdottir (RCN ’17) is the youngest person ever elected to the Reykjavik city council. Her political party Framsókn (English: Progressive Party)  gained 18,7% of the votes, making it the third-largest party in the city and the key to negotiating majority governance. The elections showed that people wanted change, and people were willing to vote for parties with young people on the frontline. Read Magnea’s journey to current achievement.

“When I sit down to write about my United World College (UWC) journey, after having been in RCN and an intern at UWC Thailand, I realize how greatly the UWC movement has influenced my life. My UWC experience goes under an umbrella of idealism, beauty and unity. The consistent challenging of my ideals was something I now find beautiful. It broke down the walls of what once created my four sided “box” and allowed me to see the abstract world beyond it. In other words it left me thinking about the world from more than a single perspective. It also made me realize that I have a voice that I can use to make a difference for the good.

UWC taught me a lot of things, one of them is that if you want to get something done you must do it. Things do not happen by sitting by. I guess this is also something that led to where I’m now. Currently, I’m doing my Master’s degree in law, where I focus mostly on human rights law, and running for the city council of Reykjavík, third on the list. Where I’m focusing on matters that are in many ways shaped by UWC values.

For example, respect for the environment. One of the most pressing issues of our times are environmental issues. Especially, for generations to come as they will inherit the world. We must make sure that people can live a sustainable lifestyle and remove all hindrances to it. The will to live a sustainable lifestyle has never been more amongst people. Sustainability and the environmental issues must be the red thread of all actions.

Additionally, humanity must be in the foreground of all decision making. We must give voice to those without it and ensure equal opportunities for all. International and intercultural understanding has never been more pressing in Iceland, as we are welcoming more refugees than ever.

I chose a political party, Framsókn, that focuses on working together and democracy and objects polarized politics. UWC also taught me that the best decisions are made when we work together and discuss things to understand the issues at hand better. Framsókn has shown that they trust young people in politics. That trust I believe to be very important as we need to have all groups and ages of society involved in decision making. Especially young people that will inherit today’s decisions.

My two years in Flekke flew by – the most transformative years of my life. The years where I grew and expanded my horizons in the shortest amount of time. RCN is in my eyes truly an ideal place created by people from all over the world that come to live together and share the same values. Values that still unite us today and will continue to influence our decisions throughout our lives. I can’t be more thankful for the UWC experience. It is my hope that the UWC movement will continue to grow successfully, always creating educational opportunities independent of people’s socio- and economic status.”

As part of the annual council meeting on Campus at the end of April every year, the members of the council elect the UWC RCN Board.
Our Board Chair Geir Jorgen Bekkervold has stepped down due to his new work commitments and a new chair has been elected. Elizabeth Sellevold, our new Board Chair has a Master in Economics from University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Elizabeth is an experienced and versatile administrator based in Oslo and works as Publishing Manager at Vigmostad & Bjørke. She is a UWC alumna from UWC Atlantic and has been associated with the International Council (2016 -2019), the Norwegian National Committee, and has been the chairperson of the UWC Norway Board (2015 -2019).
In addition to Elizabeth, the council also selected 2 new board members, Jens Petersen (Denmark) and Johnny Nilsson (Sweden).
Jens Petersen has long experience as a headmaster at a Danish boarding school whilst Johnny Nilsson adds a lot of experience from politics in Sweden.

We look forward to working together with the new board!
At the same time, we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank both Hans Lindemann and Jan Björkman who have served our Board 4 and 2 periods respectively. Hans was elected in 2010 as a representative for Denmark. During these years he also has also been most active with the Danish national committee. Hans came to us with extensive experience as a Rektor and teacher of Mathematics. During many of these years, Hans has acted as the Deputy Chair of the Board and has represented the College in the International Council of UWC. Jan Björkman joined us with a background as a politician from Sweden, having been a member of the Parliament and the Education Committee, as well as the First Vice-Speaker of the Parliament. Jan was a member of our Council from 2012 to 2016, before he joined the Board. Hans and Jan have found practical ways of utilizing their affinity with the UWC values, to the benefit of the College as a whole and for making us better known to key stakeholders in their respective countries.

Year Representatives of the graduating class

2022-05-02T12:44:53+01:00May 2nd, 2022|

Meaningful alumni engagement and relations at UWCRCN have been a focal point. Alumni are an integral part of UWC’s mission as they are our peacebuilders and creators of a sustainable future globally. Our college and its alumni are mutually committed to engaging and adding value to achieve desired outcomes. Alumni engagement is carried out predominantly with the support of year representatives of each graduating class. The class of 2022 is about to graduate and transition into alumni of UWCRCN. The class will be led by their year representatives, Victoria Jensen (Denmark) and Pedro Pontes García (Spain).

I believe that RCN is more than just the two years we lived in the Flekke bubble. It’s an international community for life. Maybe we wouldn’t see each other every day, but the strong community, experiences, and the fjord keeps us together. As a year group representative, I’ll work on the community we as RCN alumni shape together away from the Flekke bubble.

– Victoria

UWC is not just an education system. UWC is a mission, it’s a project that brings together people from all over the world, from all backgrounds, and makes them a force for change. But change does not happen at UWC colleges; it happens once we are launched into the outside world. As we, RCN 22’, become alumni, we have just begun to understand the complexity of making change, which is why our alumni connections will become vital in supporting each other’s projects, and in remembering what our fjord gave us: an opportunity to grow. Let this not be the end, but a new beginning.

– Pedro

Council meeting spring 2022

2022-05-02T12:36:03+01:00May 2nd, 2022|

UWC Red Cross Nordic is governed by a Board and a Council in accordance with the statutes of the Red Cross Nordic United World College Foundation. Over the weekend 22.04-24.04 we could finally welcome back the college’s Council to a physical meeting on campus. It has been over 2 years since we could gather together.

During the weekend there have been intensive, interesting, and rewarding meetings full of positive discussions and workshops about the way ahead for UWC RCN. The workshop centered around meaningful alumni engagement, sustainability – from vision to action, and how to position UWC RCN to relevant stakeholders after 2 years of a pandemic.  The work that has been started at the Council meeting, will be followed up by the Board and management in May.

Over the course of the weekend Council and Board members also interacted with students and staff at the college. Some council members returned back to Campus for the first time after graduation from RCN explaining how interesting it is to sit on the other side of the table understanding even more of the complexity of the organisation.

Part of the Council’s task is to elect both the Board and the Council. Ingegerd Wärnerson and Bjarki Bragason have completed their term on the Council as representatives from Sweden and Iceland. Ingegerd joined the UWC RCN Board in 2007, where she served for 2 periods, the last one as Deputy Chair. Governance within the UWC depends on the willingness of voluntary service that our outgoing Board and Council Members typify. On behalf of all our students and staff – a big thanks for what you have given!
