Visit from Inga Bostad

2018-04-10T15:34:48+01:00April 10th, 2018|

Inga Bostad visited us today here at UWC Red Cross Nordic. Inga is currently Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo and Professor at Oslo School of Architecture and Design. She was appointed director for the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the Faculty of Law from 2014-2017 and is, from 2018, at the Department of Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences. She is also Chair of the jury for Queen Sonja’s school prize for equality and inclusion (2016 – present).

Inga’s programme included an introduction to the College, contributing to IB classes in Philosophy and Development Studies plus a guided tour of our campus by students.

It was a real pleasure to host Inga and introduce her to our work towards peace, sustainability, access and inclusion – and, given her professional background, she has generously given us some direction as to ways we can further serve Norway in the fields of education and human rights.

IB Visual Art Exhibition

2018-10-16T09:31:33+01:00April 9th, 2018|

After months of work in the classroom experimenting, exploring and producing, after countless hours of preparation and setting up, the 2nd year IB Visual Art students of RCN held their Final Exhibition, for all the community to see, on Sunday the 8th of April. This was a very emotional and vulnerable moment for the 2nd year students, as each piece and each space was carefully thought through, carefully crafted and for some, extremely personal. All of this effort, however, did not go unnoticed and resulted in a stunning exhibition opening, breathtaking moments for the students when they saw staff, students and visitors reacting to their work, and lastly to a beautiful ending to their two years of hard work as RCN Visual Art students. Congratulations to all!

Marianne Andresen

2018-11-21T11:25:06+01:00April 6th, 2018|

Marianne Andresen has been a longstanding supporter of UWC Red Cross Nordic (and UWC Norge and UWC internationally) – and has been a lionhearted champion of our College for over twenty years.

Generation after generation of RCN students have benefited from her thoughtful contributions and gentle suggestions to the development of the College. Marianne has contributed in very many ways – including donations towards classrooms, the Silent House, the grand piano, scholarships, capacity building in fundraising and (more recently) the Baking House, alongside raising awareness in Oslo of our work as educators towards peace and sustainability. She has also offered up her home to be a ‘host mother’ to students on the RCN winter programme.

On the 1st November 2017, Orfeus Publishing launched ‘Slottet – Familien – Kunsten’ (‘The Palace – The Family – The Art’) – a biography of Marianne and study of her art, written by Nanna Segelcke. In tandem with the book launch, an exhibition of Marianne’s art work, ’70 Years as an Artist’, ran in central Oslo from the 2nd until the 12th November. Over 320 guests attended on the opening night.

Marianne’s wish at the outset of the project was that all proceeds from the sales of her work at the exhibition would be directed to supporting our work towards education for peace at UWC.

The exhibition, including the Shelby Davis match, raised 1.5 NOK for scholarships at RCN.

She is planning a second exhibition later this year in Stockholm to support Swedish National Committee students, in need of financial aid, to study at RCN.

On April 7th 2018, Marianne was featured in the Financial Times Weekend. Please click here to read the article and here, to see the online version with some of Marianne’s pictures included.

We look forward to welcoming Marianne and some members of her family to the opening of the Baking House in early June 2018.

On behalf of all the students and staff of RCN, past and present, thank you Marianne for your continued support of this College.

Visit from UWC Mostar staff

Bonfire outside the new Baking House

We have been delighted to be able to host a team of Support Staff from our sister College, UWC Mostar, during the second half of last week. UWC Mostar kindly hosted a team of RCN Support Staff in the summer of 2012 and we wanted to reciprocate.

Our twelve guests have had an action packed programme which included presentations, meetings, dinner in Bekker House, folk dancing (gammaldans), excursions into the local region and much more finishing with a farewell bonfire outside the new Baking House.

It has been a great opportunity to learn from each other and we would like to thank UWC Mostar for their visit. We are looking forward to the continuation of the cooperation.
