Red Cross Youth Camp

Between 3rd to 5th March, Sogn og Fjordane Røde Kors ran a youth camp at Skilbrei for local volunteers and youth interested in the Red Cross. UWCRCN sent eight students, along with the EVS Red Cross Volunteer.

The idea of the camp was to gather like-minded young people to have fun and learn more about the Red Cross’ work. Over the three days the students were able to spend time with young people from the local area; learn more about the Red Cross in Norway, Colombia and Nepal; and take part in discussions about mental health, bullying, sexual health and sexuality.

The students took part in a wide range of workshops – one of these included ‘Stopp Volden’ which is a long-running project that has recently seen RCN students helping to design new workshops.

Here is some feedback from some of our students:

Fabiana (Bolivia): “I have learnt more about the situation of the Red Cross

[in] Colombia. Each story has touched my heart.”
Silvia(Costa Rica): “I really liked the navigation…my teammate and I were really lost at the beginning but at the end we got the hang of it and now I sort of know how to find points in a map and how to get to them with a compass.”
Anna (Denmark): “I got to meet some interesting people and I feel very inspired to become more engaged in Red Cross”.

The RCN students were tasked with creating and running the final day programmes, running team-building and cooperation games, with the one condition that it had to be fun!

We would like to say ‘Thank you’ to the Sogn of Fjordane Røde Kors for the invitation and we look forward to the next one!

Our visitors dropped into a Global Politics class

Mayor Olve Grotle and his team from Førde Municipality came for a visit to learn more about the institutions based at Haugland (UWC RCN and RKHR) – both in terms of internationalism and with regard to the human resources available in Sunnfjord.

With the current process about a possible relocation of the Head Office for the Norwegian Peace Corps to this region, they were interested in exploring possible connection points between organisations and promoting internationalism in the region.

Mayor Grotle said that he was really taken by what a vibrant and dynamic international place and resource UWC is.

RCN Board Meeting in Bergen

Board MeetingA reception last Thursday evening was held at the Grand Terminus Hotel in central Bergen for friends of UWC RCN. This provided an opportunity for our Board members and Central Management Team to connect with alumni, former staff, supporters (both old and new) living in Bergen.

On Friday an RCN quarterly Board Meeting was held at the offices of our partners, SIU (the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education).

A very special thank you to our Board members who give their unstinting support and guidance on a voluntary basis to RCN – it is much valued and appreciated.

IB Places in Sogn og Fjordane

As a partnership between Sogn og Fjordane Fylkeskommune and UWC Red Cross Nordic in Fjaler, we are offering two places on our International Baccalaureate (IB) programme for entry in August 2017.

Selection will be in the form of a written application and interview conducted by admissions staff and UWC Norge (which helps to select 40 students per year to study at the 17 UWCs across the world).

This is an exciting opportunity to study at UWC RCN alongside ten other Norwegians in your year group, students from across the Nordic region and to experience the whole world in Sogn og Fjordane – diversity is our strength. UWC RCN focuses on the promotion of humanitarian and environmental concerns and Nordic values.

The academic (IB) programme prepares you for university. As a UWC RCN graduate you will be eligible for a scholarship to study in the US on the Davis United World College Scholars Program – a partnership with 94 US universities and colleges and it is the largest international scholarship program for undergraduates in the world.

Application is on VIGO, with a deadline of March 1. Applicants must be residents in Sogn og Fjordane – day or residential places are available.
