Council Members

Council Members

It was a pleasure to welcome the members of Council and other guests from Thursday 20th to Friday 22nd 2017 April for the annual UWC RCN Council meeting here on campus. Our Council members continue to act as our supporters, our bridge-builders, and our voice across the Nordic region.

The Council gathers once a year on campus and the Board twice a term, alternating between College visits and other locations throughout the Nordic region.

On Friday morning, the UWC RCN Annual Report – a printed encapsulation of our work and reflection on the year gone by – was released to coincide with the annual Council meeting.

Please see here for access to an electronic copy.

Beyond the formal Council meeting, we designed this year’s programme in a way that provided members with concrete opportunities to engage with students and staff, through careers workshops and focus groups on areas of strategic importance. For the latter, we set up some Focus Group Meetings (UWC Nordic Short Course, Fundraising, Fees, the Nordic, Environmental and Humanitarian Pillars) on Friday afternoon – open to Council members, Education and Support Staff and the newly elected Student Council members.

Presentations for students by Council membersDuring the course of the Council Meeting, we were also able to confirm the election of new members of both the College’s Council and Board – including the election of the new Chair of the RCN Board. Please see here for details of our new members.

The Council Meeting was followed by a themed dinner, ‘Earth Weekend’, which truly captured the time of the year, coordinated by our Events Management students and staff team, in the Høegh – with a set of performance by student performers for after dinner entertainment.

The evening concluded with a speech for Tove Veierød in tribute to her commitment to our College as Chair of the RCN Board. Please click here for the speech. She was given a watercolour of the fjord and College from the Council, Board, staff and students to thank her for her extraordinary commitment to the College.

Thank you to all those who contributed to the programme for our Council members and guests.

Floods: Helping in Peru

2018-10-16T09:32:11+01:00April 12th, 2017|

Juana Mélendez Martos and Edson Cadenillas Ñaccha (current RCN students from Peru) have taken the initiative to raise awareness about the serious floods that have affected Peru in recent weeks. The flooding is causing serious problems for many people who have lost their homes, and many houses have severe water damage. In some areas there is no electricity or internet, and the price of goods has increased significantly, so access is limited for those who cannot afford it. Sections of roads have been destroyed so transportation is very disrupted.

The Peruvian Red Cross is raising funds in order to assist the people who need it, and Juana and Edson have started to collect money that we can send to the Red Cross. The Knitting EAC is selling socks, hats, and other things they have made. The money collected at RCN’s gammaldans last week is also being donated. After Easter Break, our Peruvian students will host the cafe for the Sustainable Music EAC concert. All monies raised will be given to the Peruvian Red Cross who are responding on the ground to this crisis.

UN Landmine Awareness Day

Last Saturday, 8th of April, UWC Red Cross Nordic held its third campaign for the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. Students of the RCN Survivors of Conflict programme and those from countries affected by landmines led different activities to raise awareness about this issue. The organising group ran a session with survivors in the gamma (hobbit house), archery and running competitions on campus during the course of the day.

Youth Teamwork & Leadership

2018-10-16T09:32:12+01:00April 7th, 2017|

Youth Training and Leadership WorkshopThis week the first year students of RCN have started their Leirskule training week, an opportunity for our students to develop a skill set leading and guiding Norwegian school children in outdoor adventures. Leirskule is an essential UWC mission-related part of RCN’s community service and local outreach. We began the week with a series of workshops under the title ‘Youth Teamwork & Leadership’, an afternoon which aimed to deepen the understanding of what it takes to be successful in groups.

Leirskule is an essential UWC mission-related part of RCN’s community service and  local outreach.

The workshops were contributed by students, designed by students and led by students from the Youth Teamwork & Leadership EAC. They focused on understanding leadership styles, recognising the role of communication in successful/unsuccessful teams and the importance of compromise and how it works practically. As well as these workshops there were discussions on personal motivation within a team setting and a fantastic set of Red Cross workshops on effective communication between colleagues.

We ran 15 workshops over the course of the afternoon – hopefully it has helped inform our first years and given them some points to think about as we embark on another exciting Leirskule season!
