The Council of UWC RCN

It was a pleasure to welcome the members of Council and other guests from Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th April for the annual UWC RCN Council meeting here on campus. Our Council members continue to act as our supporters, our bridge-builders, and our voice across the Nordic region.

The Council gathers once a year on campus and the Board twice a term, alternating between College visits and other locations throughout the Nordic region.

On Friday morning, the UWC RCN Annual Report – a printed encapsulation of our work and reflection on the year gone by – was released to coincide with the annual Council meeting. Please see here for access to an electronic copy.

A workshop led by Council MembersBeyond the formal Council meeting, we designed this year’s programme in a way that provided members with concrete opportunities to engage with students and staff, through careers workshops and focus groups on areas of strategic importance. For the latter, we set up some Action Plan Focus Groups (Academic, Extra-Academic, Pastoral, Management, Stewardship and Impact) on Friday afternoon – open to Council members, education and support staff and both the outgoing and the newly elected Student Councils – for discussion of certain areas identified by the Board.

During the course of the Council Meeting, we were also able to confirm the election of new members of both the College’s Council and Board. Please see here for details of our new members.

The Council Meeting was followed by a themed dinner, ‘Snow in Springtime’, which truly captured the time of the year, coordinated by our Events students and staff team, in the Høegh – with a set of performance by students performers for after dinner entertainment.

Thank you to all those who contributed to the programme for our Council members and guests.

Student Council Transition Weekend

The old team - gazing off into their responsibility-free futures...

The outgoing Student Council members – gazing off into their responsibility-free futures…

Last weekend, the outgoing RCN Student invited the incoming Student Council to a handover / training weekend on the island of Værlandet. This has become an excellent tradition in recent years at RCN – at this time last year, a highly successful ‘retreat’ was held at Heggnes (on the side of the Dalsfjord). Both Councils will be actively involved later this week in hosting our UWC RCN Council members and attending and participating in various workshops on careers beyond RCN and on the College’s strategic action plan. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Student Council for their invaluable contribution over the course of the last academic year and to welcome the incoming team.

(Photos by Balder Morsund … he should have been in the pictures too!)

The week of Ridderrennet 2016

Sina Tenold, a member of the ‘Knights’ Extra-academic commitment which enables participating students to have amazing experiences in the local nature, as well as going further afield, has written the following thoughts having returned from Ridderrennet – the world’s largest winter sports event for visually impaired and differently-abled athletes.

The scene at Ridderrennet

The Knights are  back on campus after a great a great experience at Ridderuka. The week ended with Ridderrennet itself where all our competitors had excellent results. Mohammed (Iraq) and Mean (Cambodia) both won events in their class. Belén (Spain) did her first ever 10 km on skis and managed to win her class at the same time! Melvin (El Salvador) improved his previous time for the 20 km race by over 2 hours and by doing that won the silver medal in his class.

The volunteers, who did a great job as hosts in the restaurant, finished their week with an amazing day in the sun, getting a tan to match their bright, orange hoodies. The group want to thank all the staff, especially Hilde, our EAC-leader, and Ben for helping with organization and making this week possible.

Goalball Tournament at the College

The Goalball PlayersGoalball is a Paralympic sport in which the blind can play with the sighted – as the sighted participants are blindfolded. We learned about Goalball from our long-term partners and friends at the Laski Institute – a school for the blind and visually impaired in Poland. We have had many exchanges with this partner school, and Goalball has been part of all of them! We continue playing at the College, as one of our goals is to promote this inclusive, exciting sport in Norway. We have regular practice sessions every Sunday night and, as an end of term celebration, we decided to organize an Inter-House competition. Each House has some experienced players, so the level was high with the final match between Iceland and Norway House.

Even though Iceland House won, the Norway House Team displayed very high competence and won an award for the most sporting behaviour.
