On Sunday March 12th, UWC Red Cross Nordic hosted its second TEDx event and the second one ever held in Sogn og Fjordane. The organizing committee involved 12 students, with technical support coming from students on the ‘Media and Communications’ course at Hafstad Vidaregåande Skule.

The programme was divided into four sections: ‘Politically Speaking’, ‘The Future’, Lived Experiences’, ‘Perspectives’. A total of twelve speakers (seven guests and five from the campus) shared a variety of stories and ideas – including travel on earth and in space, non-violent communication and the concept of ‘Slow TV’ here in Norway. There were musical performances as part of the programme and two student groups, LEAF and SOS, provided refreshments in some of the breaks.

TEDxUWCRCN is available to view here.

First and second year students attended a presentation given by Emily Wilkes of Lanterna Education, an organisation that offers academic support to IB students –  which started life as a CAS project in Sweden. Emily shared valuable tips on topics such as time management and revision, procrastination and distractions, recommending useful apps and responding patiently and constructively to many questions from the audience. It was inspiring and motivating to hear from an IB student who understands the needs and concerns of our students. Emily’s enthusiastic delivery and relevant content kept the audience engaged and interested.

Developing Pastoral Care

The RCN Safety Net: Developing Pastoral Care.
Two workshops were run on Saturday morning by special guest, Ingeborg Lykseth, as part of the College’s commitment to developing pastoral care on campus. Ingeborg is a well-known entrepreneur in Norway, director, psychiatrist, certified coach, and speaker – and was invited by our teacher, Cristina Pinazo, to run two workshops (one for House Reps and some selected first years and the second for a group of residential staff).

The workshop was a short demo of the methodology FROG Online Identity developed by Ingeborg Lykseth, which trained our students and staff in identity, self-leadership and personal development. This method combines neuro-physiology science, story-telling and coaching – focusing on the participants’ strengths to overcome challenges and achieve their maximum potential and success in life. A feedback session is planned this week with a view to explore how best to introduce this methodology to improving the RCN Safety Net.

Thank you, Ingeborg for driving across from Oslo to deliver these workshops.
